Sydney Mardi Gras is the biggest night on the city’s calendar for outfits that are anything but ordinary — sequins, latex, feathers, mesh, leather harnesses, corsetry, and costumes people have spent months building. It is also the hardest single night of the year on clothing. Glitter, body paint, spilled drinks, sunscreen, sweat and a parade route in humid March heat all end up in the fabric.

Before the parade

• Get costumes cleaned and pressed early — the week before Mardi Gras is our busiest, and specialist pieces cannot be rushed
• Check the fastenings — a loose sequin panel or a failing zip is far easier to notice now than at 9pm on Oxford Street
• Press rather than re-clean — if a costume is clean but creased from storage, it only needs a press
• Test nothing new at home — home spot-cleaning on sequinned or coated fabric is how costumes get ruined the week before
• Air anything that has been stored — a musty smell needs cleaning, not perfume

After the parade — and why timing matters

The single most useful thing you can do is bring the outfit in quickly. March in Sydney is humid, and a costume left balled up in a bag after a long, sweaty night develops mildew and set-in staining within days. Perspiration is protein-based, so it needs cool treatment; leaving it a fortnight in a hot cupboard turns an easy job into a difficult one, and salt residues weaken fibres around the underarms permanently.

The specific problems Mardi Gras creates

• Glitter — it migrates through an entire wash load. Costumes with loose glitter are handled separately
• Body paint and makeup — oil-based, which is where solvent cleaning genuinely outperforms washing
• Sequins and beading — heat and agitation loosen the thread; these are cleaned gently and finished by hand
• Latex and PVC — never dry cleaned in a standard solvent cycle, which degrades the material. Tell us if a piece is latex
• Feathers — they need careful handling to keep the plume rather than coming back flat
• Fake tan and sunscreen — these leave orange and rust-coloured marks that need targeted treatment, not scrubbing

Leather, harnesses and structured pieces

Leather harnesses, corsets and structured pieces are cleaned as leather, not as fabric — leather and suede items start from $129. Water and standard detergent dry the hide out and cause it to stiffen and crack, so these should never go through a machine at home. If a piece combines leather with fabric or hardware, mention it, because the two components are treated separately.

Storing a costume until next year

Clean it before it goes away. Every year we see costumes that were put away unwashed after the parade and come out the following February with yellowed underarms, set-in drink marks and moth damage in any wool or feather trim. Store on a broad hanger in a breathable cotton cover, never plastic, and keep it out of direct light so colours do not fade.

A realistic week-by-week plan

• Four weeks out — get the costume out of storage and look at it properly in daylight. Damage and musty smells are easier to fix now than in the final week
• Three weeks out — send anything needing specialist cleaning: leather, latex, feathers, heavy beading
• Two weeks out — try the whole outfit on, including shoes and harnesses, and fix fastenings
• One week out — final press for anything creased, and collect everything so it is hanging ready
• The week after — everything goes straight back in for cleaning, before March humidity sets the stains
