The problem with snow gear is that it hides its condition. It looks fine in the bag. Meanwhile, sweat, sunscreen, snow-melt and lift-line grime sit in the insulation and start breaking down the fabric coatings.
Technical snow gear combines waterproof membranes, durable water repellent (DWR) coatings, taped seams and synthetic or down insulation. A hot home wash with ordinary detergent strips the DWR coating and can clog the membrane — so the jacket wets out on your next trip. Harsh spin cycles clump insulation. In contrast, specialist cleaning uses processes matched to technical fabrics, so the gear comes back clean with its performance intact.
The worst thing you can do with snow gear is store it dirty. Sweat and sunscreen residues degrade coatings over months, and damp gear grows mould in storage — a common, expensive discovery the following June. A post-trip clean removes the residues, restores loft to insulation, and dries everything completely.
