Then comes thorough dry dust removal, often the most important step, because a surprising share of a rug’s weight is dry grit that must come out before any water is introduced. Only then is the rug washed with a method matched to its fibre, rinsed, and dried evenly under control. Finally the pile is groomed and the fringes finished.
That sequence is what separates a rug that comes back revived from one that comes back damp, stiff and smelling worse.
Hiring a supermarket carpet machine and going at a rug on the floor is where most rug disasters start. Household machines push far too much water in and cannot extract enough back out, so the rug stays wet for days, long enough for mould and a permanent musty smell to set into the backing. Colours bleed when dyes are not stabilised first. Over-scrubbing distorts the pile. And a rug dried flat on a hard floor traps moisture underneath.

Often, yes, but timing matters. Fresh pet urine on wool responds well if treated within days. Old urine that has dried into the backing can leave a permanent odour and a colour change, because the ammonia alters the dye. Red wine and coffee lift well from synthetics and reasonably from wool, less reliably from viscose. We assess every stain before we start and tell you honestly what is likely to come out. Carpet is cleaned in place with an extraction machine, because it cannot be moved. A rug is a loose textile that can be taken away, dusted thoroughly, immersed or low-moisture cleaned according to its fibre, and dried under control. That is why rug cleaning produces a better result than running a carpet machine over a rug: the rug gets a process designed for it, not a process designed for wall-to-wall carpet.
