A commercial shirt press applies steam, heat and pressure at once, which relaxes the fibres and sets a crisp finish that a domestic iron cannot match. Collars, cuffs and plackets are finished separately by hand, because those are the panels people actually look at. The shirt is then hung immediately so it does not crease on the way home.

• Dry cleaning — from $13. For silk, heavily structured shirts, anything labelled dry clean only, or shirts with oil-based staining
• Press only. If a shirt is clean but has creased in storage or a suitcase, it does not need cleaning at all — just ask for a press

The maths on ten shirts

At ten or more shirts in one order, wash and iron drops to $5 each. That is a fortnight of work shirts professionally laundered and pressed for $50, plus $15 if you want them collected and returned. Against roughly two and a half hours of your own ironing, most people find that an easy trade.

How to get more life out of your shirts

• Send shirts in batches rather than one at a time — it is cheaper and gentler than frequent single washes
• Unbutton collars and cuffs before sending
• Point out marks, especially collar grime and deodorant build-up, so they are treated before pressing
• Store pressed shirts with space between them; a crammed wardrobe undoes the work
• Rotate your shirts rather than wearing favourites into the ground

Why shirts wear out where they do

Shirts almost always fail in the same three places: the collar fold, the cuff edge and the underarm. Collars go first because skin oils and sunscreen build up along the fold and are then set by ironing. Cuffs abrade against desks and watch straps. Underarms suffer from the aluminium salts in antiperspirant, which stiffen the fabric and yellow the fibre over time. None of that is caused by professional cleaning — it is caused by wear and by delaying cleaning, because the residues keep working on the fibre while the shirt sits in the basket.

The practical takeaway: wash shirts after one or two wears rather than storing them soiled, and flag the collar and underarm when you drop them off so those areas are pre-treated rather than simply pressed over.

Cotton, poplin, twill and non-iron

• Poplin — crisp and smooth, presses beautifully, creases readily in a bag
• Twill — a heavier diagonal weave, more forgiving through the day, needs more heat to finish
• Oxford — textured and casual, hides creasing, does not take a razor-sharp finish and is not meant to
• Non-iron cotton — resin-treated so it resists creasing; still benefits from professional pressing, but the finish is softer
• Linen and linen blends — will crease, by design. Pressed properly they look intentional rather than untidy
