Why home stain removal usually fails

• Heat sets protein and tannin stains — hot water on blood, egg, coffee or red wine effectively cooks the stain into the fibre
• Rubbing spreads and fuzzes — it pushes the stain deeper and lifts the nap on wool, silk and suede
• The wrong chemistry causes damage — chlorine bleach on wool or silk destroys the fibre, and household spot sprays can strip dye
• Invisible stains oxidise later — sugar, white wine and perspiration dry clear, then turn yellow-brown weeks after you have put the garment away

The main stain groups and how they are treated

• Tannin — coffee, tea, red wine, fruit juice. Treated with acidic agents; never soap first, which sets them
• Protein — blood, egg, dairy, perspiration. Cool treatment only, with enzymes
• Oil and grease — food oil, cosmetics, engine grease. Solvent-based, which is where dry cleaning genuinely outperforms washing
• Dye — ink, grass, cordial. The hardest group, treated cautiously to avoid lifting the garment’s own colour
• Combination — gravy, lipstick, makeup. These need staged treatment in the correct order

What to do before you bring it in

• Blot with a clean white cloth — never rub
• Skip the hot water entirely
• Do not iron or tumble dry the garment, which sets the mark
• Tell us what the stain is and roughly when it happened — age and origin change the treatment
• Bring it in sooner rather than later; fresh stains have a far higher success rate

An honest word on what is achievable

Most stains come out. Some do not. Long-set dye stains, heat-set marks and anything that has already bleached the fabric underneath may be improved rather than erased, and old perspiration can permanently weaken fibres around the underarm. We will tell you what we expect to achieve before we start rather than after, and if a garment is not worth treating we will say so.

Fabric changes everything

The same coffee spill behaves differently on cotton, wool and silk. Cotton is robust and tolerates a wider range of treatments. Wool is protein-based, so it reacts badly to alkaline products and heat, and it felts if agitated. Silk is both protein-based and dye-sensitive, meaning an aggressive treatment can lift the colour along with the stain. Synthetics such as polyester resist water-based stains well but hold oil stubbornly, which is why a salad dressing mark on a polyester blouse is often harder to shift than the same mark on cotton.

Structured garments add another layer. A suit jacket has an interlining, shoulder padding and a canvas front that all react differently to moisture. Treating a stain on the outer fabric without accounting for what sits underneath is how garments come back with a water ring or a collapsed shoulder — which is precisely why solvent cleaning and a proper press matter on tailored pieces.

Common Sydney stains we see most

• Coffee and takeaway — the daily CBD hazard, and very treatable if it has not been through a dryer
• Red wine — tannin, best treated fresh; salt and soda water at the table help but do not finish the job
• Sunscreen — an underrated one. Avobenzone reacts with iron in water and leaves rust-coloured marks on collars and white shirts
• Perspiration and deodorant — the aluminium in antiperspirant builds up and yellows over time, and it stiffens the fabric
• Grass and mud — sport and school uniforms; a combination stain needing staged treatment
• Ink — a shirt-pocket classic, solvent-treated and never rubbed
