Perspiration is slightly acidic and carries salts. On silk, those salts leave a pale tide mark at the underarm and, over time, actually weaken and discolour the fibres. The damage often stays invisible when the garment comes off and only shows after a few weeks, or after storage, as a yellow patch that will not lift. This is why a silk blouse worn on a warm day needs prompt cleaning rather than a second wear.
Aluminium-based antiperspirants react with sweat to form a stiff, waxy residue that bonds to silk and turns yellow. Alcohol-based perfumes and hairspray can strip dye on contact, leaving a lighter halo exactly where you sprayed. The fixes are simple: let deodorant dry fully before dressing, spray perfume before the garment goes on, and never spray over silk.
Simple, unlined, pale silk in a plain weave, such as a camisole or a scarf, can usually be hand-washed if you are gentle. Use cool water and a detergent made for silk, never laundry powder. Do not rub, wring or twist. Swirl briefly, rinse in cool water, press the water out between towels and dry flat away from sun and heat. A drop of white vinegar in the final rinse helps preserve the sheen.

Fresh sweat and deodorant marks, perfume halos on colourfast silk, and general dulling from body oils usually come out well. Set-in yellow underarm stains that have oxidised over a season are harder and may only partially lift. Where perfume has stripped the dye, the colour is gone for good. Always clean, because invisible body oils oxidise into stains and attract insects over a season. Hang structured pieces on padded hangers. Fold heavier or bias-cut items loosely to avoid stretching. Keep silk out of direct light, which fades it, and out of plastic dry-cleaning bags for long-term storage, which trap humidity and can yellow the fabric. A breathable cotton garment bag is ideal.
